Socrates

Born 269 B.C. and died 399 B.C.

 

Athenian philosopher, said to have been a sculptor and soldier.

One of the main sources for his life is Plato, who may have attributed his own

opinions to Socrates.

He was a resolute opponent of tyranny, which may have brough about his trail.

Accused in 399 B.C. on charges of impiety and corruption of youth, he was

condemned to die by drinking hemlock.

 

Socratic methode:

Way of teaching used by Socrates, in which he aimed to guide pupils to clear thinking

on ethics and politics by asking questions and then exposing their inconsistencies in

cross-examination.

 

HEMLOCK: poisonous European plant. An extract from it paralyses the

nervous system and was used by the Greek as a form of capital punishment.
