Marcus Tullius Cicero 106-43 B.C.

Roman statesman. As cosul in 63 B.C., he saved the republic when it was threatened

by Catiline's conspiracy, but when the first Triumvirate was formed he was exiled,

and devoted himself to literature.

On the outbreak of the Civil War in 49 B.C., he followed Pompey to Greece, but

was treated well by Ceasar on his return to Italy.

After Caesar's assassination he supported Octavian (the future Augustus) against

Mark Antony , but pleaded in passionate speeches for the restoration of

republicanism.

When Antony and Octavian came to terms in 43 B.C., he was killed while trying

to escape to the East.

His speeches and essays survive and had immens influence on later literature.
